EmpowerU Wellness Program

EmpowerU

New Wellness Program at Glen Eddy

Glen Eddy recently introduced EmpowerU, a newly expanded wellness program in conjunction with Morrison Senior Living. Chandra Santiago is the full-time wellness director responsible for implementing the program and coordinating all land- and water-based exercise and fitness classes.

During the fall 2012, more than 50 percent of the residents attended a series of Resident Forums and participated in functional assessments and lifestyle surveys. The data from those assessments dictated the design and development of the classes that would be offered.

Classes began in early November and were completed in the first quarter 2013 at which time residents were invited to participate in a second round of assessments. Outcomes have provided detailed information for both the individual and collective group and has helped determine what classes need to be modified and which residents are ready to move up to a more challenging level or diversify into other classes.

Participation overview as of May 13, 2013

81 -  Independent living residents
23 -  Enriched housing residents

Resident Story:
As the result of the EmpowerU Program, Della has been able to get dressed without using her support system due to her balance increasing. Now, Della is climbing the stairs and pushing her wheelchair instead of wheeling herself around. Della has also made other strides, including using stairs at her temple that has railing on only one side. The increased independencee has empowered her!  Della’s goal this August is to walk up the stairs to the family's camp in Maine which has no railings ... something she has not been able to do in many years. Della is well on her way to reaching her goal.
