YOGA: A Healing Path

Yoga is a 5,000 year old science, which includes asana or body postures and movements, meditation, deep relaxation and pranayama or breathing exercises. As a participant in a yoga class you will experience a renewed sense of ease in your life, as it will help you become an active participant in healing while gaining a sense of control.

Many health benefits of yoga practice have been documented and include:

  • Pulse rate decreases

  • Stabilizes nervous system

  • Blood pressure decreases

  • Musculoskeletal flexibility and range of motion increases

  • Strength, balance and resiliency increases

  • Endurance increases

  • Sleep improves

  • Immunity increases

Therapeutic Yoga for the Heart Tuesday,  4:30 - 5:45 pm

You will experience deep relaxation and pranayama to relax the nervous system and restore well-being. Each class includes very gentle yoga asana, vinyasa and restorative postures, which will leave you feeling calm and renewed. Based on the model developed by Nischala Devi and used in the Ornish Lifestyle Heart Trial the class has been expanded to include those with arthritis, fibromyalgia, hypertension, as well as heart related concerns and other health issues.

Beginning Level Yoga Tuesday,  6 – 7:15 pm 

You will learn and practice basic level yoga asanas, vinyasa, as well as pranayama practices and meditative deep relaxation. Appropriate for beginners and those with prior experience.

Yoga for Wellness: Thursday,  5:30-6:45 pm

Class will practice the Viniyoga andStructural Yoga methods to bring stability and strength to the back, hips, and sacrum, while bringing awareness to the breath patterns guiding motion. Viniyoga methods were featured in the NIH study on yoga for back pain. You will also practice specialized motions to increase joint circulation, mobility and strength, pranayama and deep relaxation to reduce stress. A good class for those new to yoga.


MARY J. SCOTT, MA, CYT, RYT 500,is a wellness educator, a counselor, a CertifiedPersonal Trainer at Sunnyview Lifestyle Wellness Center, and a certified Yoga of the Heart ® teacher and was trained by Nischala Joy Devi, the creator and director for the Stress Management portion of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Lifestyle Program for Reversing Heart Disease. Mary is a member of IAYT, the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and received certification as a Structural  Yoga Teacher and a  Structural Yoga Therapistfrom Mukunda Stiles in 2008.

 Classes are usually scheduled in 7 or 8- week sessions.  A 7-week session is $90 and an 8-week session is $98. Please contact the instructor at 346-7389 for more information or
