Facts About Hearing Loss

More than 28 million people in the United States have hearing loss. There are many reasons for hearing loss, including:

• an inherited medical condition
• exposure to loud or constant noise
• illness
• traumatic injury
• age (hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic condition for people 65 and older)

When is it time to see an audiologist?

Infants who are not responding to noises or the sound of others' voices.

Children with speech impediments, slower or different speech than peers, or difficulty understanding conversations.

Adults and seniors who ask for repetition of words often during conversations; show signs of straining to hear (tilting one's head); turning up the volume on the television or radio; not responding to the telephone, alarm clocks, doorbell, etc.
