Assistive Technology Program

Our Program

The goal of the Assistive Technology program at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital is to identify solutions, including systems, devices, and strategies that meet an individual’s needs for more effective communication at home, school, work, and/or in the community.

Who Can Benefit?

Our team of therapists works with individuals who complex communication needs, including those with the following conditions:

  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Stroke
  • Acquired language disorders / aphasia
  • Metabolic and genetic conditions
  • Degenerative and neuromuscular conditions
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Apraxia of speech
  • Dysarthria
  • ALS
  • Mitochondrial diseases
  • Developmental delays
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Autism spectrum disorders


The Assistive Technology program is staffed by a team of specialists with expertise in the area of augmentative communication and assistive technology.  The team is led by a speech-language pathologist, an occupational therapist and physical therapist. Based upon intake information, an individual will be scheduled with the appropriate clinician(s).  During the evaluation, the team will typically assess the following areas:

  • Speech
  • Language
  • Other means of communication
  • Functional vision and visual processing abilities
  • Physical movement abilities
  • Seating and Positioning

Following an evaluation, clinician(s) will make recommendations regarding appropriate communication approaches and systems, as well as information on how to customize solutions to meet an individual’s unique needs.  The team is also available to provide training for caregivers on the use of recommended systems, devices, and techniques.
