Maternal-Infant Health Nursing

The Eddy Visiting Nurse Association Maternal-Infant Health Nursing program provides for the special health and psychosocial needs of high-risk antepartum and post-partum women, pregnant teens and newborns.

Pregnancy, the birthing experience and caring for a newborn are challenging times for any family. For teen and first-time mothers, and medically or socially high-risk individuals, such events can be especially stressful. This program provides:

  • comprehensive assessment
  • skilled nursing care, including antepartum, postpartum and newborn care
  • social services and referral to community resources (WIC, teen parenting programs, etc.)
  • patient education, including breastfeeding, childbirth preparation and infant care.

Individuals who may benefit from maternal-infant health nursing include newborns who have neonatal intensive care discharge; congenital anomalies; respiratory or cardiac difficulties; or failure to thrive. Additionally, maternal-infant health nurse specialists can counsel women about psychosocial issues, such as domestic violence, mental health, and sexual and child abuse.
