HIV/AIDS Care & Eddy AIDS Care Team

Eddy Visiting Nurse Association (Eddy VNA) provides highly skilled home care specially designed to meet the needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, their families, and loved ones. Home care is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our nursing staff, with expertise in caring for people with HIV/AIDS, is knowledgeable and sensitive to the special needs of patients and their families.

Eddy AIDS Care Team

Eddy VNA is especially proud to offer the Eddy AIDS Care Team Program.

This innovative and award-winning program provides a range of non-medical, home-based support services, including :

  • child care
  • transportation
  • household chores, such as running errands, food shopping, meal preparation
  • spiritual services
  • companionship for those with HIV/AIDS and their families

Perhaps most importantly, this program provides the emotional support, encouragement and friendship many patients need to cope with the disease.

Volunteers are recruited from religious groups, area congregations and the general community. All services provided by the care teams are confidential, non-sectarian and free of charge. Eddy VNA staff train the volunteer teams, teaching them how to respond to a patient's needs, and about safety, support and spiritual issues. Each patient, called a "care partner" is paired with his/her own "care team" of volunteers who collaborate to meet the needs of their care partner.

The Eddy AIDS Care Team was the first volunteer program in the country to incorporate medical care with the volunteer model. Eddy VNA integrates its AIDS Long-Term Home Health Care Program (LTHHCP), a provider of home care services for persons suffering from HIV/AIDS, with the care provided by the AIDS Care Teams to offer this valuable system of coordinated care.

Recipient of the 1996 Human Services Program of the Year Award from the Community Foundation of the Capital Region, this program received startup funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Howard & Bush Foundation, the Eddy Visiting Nurse Association, The Community AIDS Foundation, The Community Foundation, Our Brothers' Keeper Foundation, and The Rubin Foundation.
