TROY, N.Y. -- Eddy Visiting Nurse Association (Eddy VNA), an affiliate of The Eddy not-for-profit network, has named the recipients of its fifth annual "Lucier's Light Awards," in recognition of outstanding strength, courage and inner spirit by a patient or caregiver in the face of challenge and adversity. The winners are Arthur and Janet Johnsen of Rensselaerville, Albany County; Karen Paglia of Troy, Rensselaer County; Louis Meyer of Hannacroix, Greene County; and Phillip Patterson of Philmont, Columbia County.

Eddy VNA established the Lucier's Light Award in 2007 in memory of Gail Lucier, a longtime dedicated nurse who touched many lives personally and professionally, and who never lost her spirit or will to live despite battling recurring bouts of cancer over 10 years. Each year, two winners are chosen in the immediate Capital Region, and two in the Columbia-Greene counties.

"We wanted to recognize these patients and family caregivers because they are real examples of courage," remarks Michelle Mazzacco, vice president of Eddy VNA. "Our recipients battle incredible odds, from disease to multiple chronic illnesses, to financial or familial challenges. Yet somehow, they still manage to emanate an inner strength and spirit to succeed and live each day forward in the best way possible. They are simply an inspiration to us.

"Our recipients are extraordinary, inspiring examples of what each of us can do in life, despite the challenges and adversity," states Mazzacco. "I'm proud that our home care staff can help provide the vital services so that all our patients and their family caregivers can continue to manage their conditions and live independent and fulfilled lives in the community."
